The Physical Literacy Environment

Image
While I was in grade school my literacy environment was not any different than any regular classroom. How did this make me feel while I was reading? I wasnt totally relaxed or impressed by the effort to make the student comfortable enough to read. Though I had a few teachers that would set a day apart for us to have a reading day where this day would be a relaxed reading day with our blankets and pillows. Apart from special days like this there were never a time that I went to school and felt comfortable enough to read in a desk. In fact I remember many times that I would say to myself 'yeah i am just going to wait till I get home to try to read this book.' Then I got home and didnt always read, but the reason I wanted to wait was because I knew I could get comfortable at home.      I think most teachers are going to be challenged in the area of finding room in their room to create a reading space. I also think teachers are going to be hesitant to put...

Literacy Lesson Planning

Hello all and welcome beack to my literacy teaching blog! I wanted to dive into the steps I take into making a lesson plan.  In my years growing up in school one of the lessons that stand out to me in an ELAR class is when I was in High school when my teacher gave us a project to make a book that will compare and contrast two fairy tales one of which had to be from the brothers grimm. The reason I remember this assignment so well is because I had to put in a lot of thought and time into making it something that is mine. I was able to make it what I wanted it to be. I appreciated this teacher for allowing me to use my own deep thoughts and creativity to put together a project.  When I think about putting together a literacy lesson plan I know that I will have to bring in my students interest to grab them into my lesson. I will use my interest pages to find something that will bring in the interest of my students much like my teacher did for me when we were able to make a ...

Diversity In Lit

Hello all and welcome back to my blog!  For this blog I will be speaking on the subject of Diversity in schools/ literacy.  My experiences  In our small town we do not hold very many different cultures and it is a predominently white town. Because I grew up with mostly Cuacasion and African Americans it is hard for me to say if my school discriminated other cultures. In my classrooms as a child I do not remember reading very many diverse books we did however go over Black History month activist. I would say that working in a school now days Black history month is not nearly as celebrated as it was when I was little. In 2019-2020 I worked at the school I graduated from and as expected most of the students were caucasion, latino, and african american. We did how ever have students from the middle east and other students were not as receptive towards them because of how reserved they were. I consulted my boyfriend about his experience because we are from the same town ...

Literacy blog- The Beginning

Starting a Blog    Hello all!! Welcome to my first ever blog! I am doing this blog becuuse I am working towards being a teacher and one of the requirements for a class is writing a literacy blog for myself. So! Welcome to the inside of my brain I hope you enjoy!        When I think about literacy education it scares me because I do not feel prepared enough to be able to teach small students how to read, listen, or write. For me litearcy was hard already and if I step into teaching ELAR I will be totally out of my comfort zone. Sometimes it sounds fun and other times it sounds overwhelming. So starting a blog about it also seems scarey because this will be an insight into how my brain works. Although this feeling is here I also feel excited to be able to put my ideas down and feel organized about how literacy education works. Right now literacy education is a huge jumbled mess in my brain and hopefully a blog will help my brain organize all the different par...
