Literacy Lesson Planning

Hello all and welcome beack to my literacy teaching blog! I wanted to dive into the steps I take into making a lesson plan.

In my years growing up in school one of the lessons that stand out to me in an ELAR class is when I was in High school when my teacher gave us a project to make a book that will compare and contrast two fairy tales one of which had to be from the brothers grimm. The reason I remember this assignment so well is because I had to put in a lot of thought and time into making it something that is mine. I was able to make it what I wanted it to be. I appreciated this teacher for allowing me to use my own deep thoughts and creativity to put together a project.

When I think about putting together a literacy lesson plan I know that I will have to bring in my students interest to grab them into my lesson. I will use my interest pages to find something that will bring in the interest of my students much like my teacher did for me when we were able to make a book how we wanted it to be. Another important aspect of planning a litereacy lesson is knowing your students abilities and knowing how much independency you can give your students. As a teacher you want to give your students all the possibilities to learn through different medias.

Thank you for reading, see you again next time!

  1. Katy,

I like your description of your ELAR writing assignment about the Brother's Grimm, it sounds like you were full circle learning from becoming aware of the objective, studying/thinking, planning, and then producing a piece that was YOU. That is a great experience to have.
For your future I see you being a very responsive teacher to your students needs with their interests in mind, which means you want to know everything about who they are, including their varying abilities. You are also correct in giving these learners multiple ways to receive and produce their process. Great!

  2. Hey Katy,

I loved the assignment that your teacher picked. Comparing two fairytales, sounds like so much fun. I would've loved to do that project! Focusing on the interest of a student is extremely important. When an assignment is interesting, the students want to participate more. Great job on your blog! Keep up the good work!

  3. Hi Katy! I love the assignment that your teacher assigned! It sounds like it would be so interesting and there are so many ways that connections could be made in this assignment as well! I also love that you talk about getting their interest! I think sometimes, when you have a routine and certain situations occurring daily, you can forget to make your class interesting again (hello teacher burnout). I also appreciate that it seems like you really know hot to reel them in and keep going their learning!
